What is a gravel bike and how is it different?

A gravel bike is designed for riding on gravel roads, paved roads, and forest trails. At first glance, it may look similar to a road bike, but gravel bikes feature wider tyres, a more comfortable frame geometry, and components built to handle mixed terrain and rougher surfaces.

Gravel bikes are agile, versatile, and suitable for both short rides and long-distance adventures. Thanks to additional mounting points for bags, racks, and mudguards, they are ideal for daily commuting, weekend rides, and bikepacking trips alike.

How Is a Gravel Bike Different from Other Bikes?

  • Gravel vs Road Bike – Gravel bikes come with wider tyres, a longer wheelbase, and a more relaxed riding position. They are built for riding on a wide variety of surfaces, giving you far more freedom when choosing your route.
  • Gravel vs Cyclocross Bike – Gravel bikes offer more comfort, a wider gear range, and a less aggressive riding setup, making them better suited for longer rides and mixed terrain adventures.
  • Gravel vs Mountain Bike – Gravel bikes are lighter and more efficient on changing terrain and mixed surfaces, while mountain bikes are designed specifically for rough trails and technical riding with suspension systems.
  • Gravel vs Touring Bike – Touring bikes focus on maximum comfort and slower-paced travel. Gravel bikes feel more sporty and responsive, making them ideal for faster riding, although some gravel models are also designed for long-distance touring and bikepacking.

Why Choose a Gravel Bike?

Do you enjoy road cycling but want the freedom to include gravel roads, forest paths, and occasional trails in your rides? Are you looking for one versatile bike that can handle almost everything? Then a gravel bike is exactly what you need.

With a gravel bike, you can confidently ride on paved roads, gravel tracks, and lighter trails. Add wider tyres, and even sandy roads become easier to tackle. Many models can also be equipped with mudguards, racks, and bikepacking bags, making them perfect for touring adventures and multi-day rides.

Gravel bikes are also an excellent choice for commuting and everyday use. Whether you ride to work, explore the countryside, or head out for longer adventures, a gravel bike combines speed, comfort, and versatility in one package.

How to choose the right gravel bike?

Buying a gravel bike is a great investment, so it’s worth choosing a model that truly matches your riding style, frequency, terrain, and preferred road surfaces. The right setup will make every ride more comfortable, efficient, and enjoyable.

MySport expert tips for choosing a gravel bike

  • Frame size & geometry -  Finding the correct frame size is essential for comfort, control, and riding efficiency.
Choose a bike with a shorter wheelbase and a more upright riding position if you want a gravel bike for everyday use, commuting, or touring adventures. Opt for a longer and more aggressive geometry if you are looking for a performance-focused bike for training or racing.
  • Frame material - Most gravel bikes are available with either aluminium or carbon frames. Aluminium models are generally more budget-friendly and ideal for daily riding, touring, or regular training. Carbon frames are lighter, stiffer, and absorb vibrations more effectively, making them perfect for performance riding and longer distances. While carbon is often associated with race-oriented models, we also offer comfortable touring gravel bikes with carbon frames.
  • Tyre width - Tyre width has become one of the hottest topics in gravel cycling. Until 2025, 45 mm tyres were considered the standard for gravel bikes. From 2026 onwards, wider tyres are becoming increasingly popular for improved comfort and control. Our recommendations for tyre clearance and tyre width: for everyday riding and mixed terrain: 40–55 mm tyres work perfectly, for gravel racing and performance riding - 45 mm is the minimum, while we recommend 50 mm or wider for better grip and stability.
  • Drivetrai - The main choice here is between a 1x drivetrain (single front chainring) and a 2x drivetrain (double front chainrings). Both systems are excellent; it depends on your riding preferences. Currently, 1x drivetrains are the most popular choice, often paired with 10–13-speed cassettes featuring wide gear ranges such as 11–44T or even 10–50T. Shimano or SRAM? — That mostly comes down to personal preference and riding feel.
  • Brakes - We strongly recommend choosing a gravel bike with hydraulic disc brakes. They provide significantly better braking performance, control, and safety in all weather conditions.
  • Mounting points & accessories - Before buying, check whether the bike has the mounting points you need for mudguards, racks, bottle cages, or bikepacking bags. Some models are specifically designed for carrying additional weight on long-distance trips. Most gravel bikes are sold without accessories, but all necessary equipment can be added separately.
  • Weight - A bike’s weight mainly depends on the frame material and component level. In general, the more premium the bike, the lighter it becomes. Gravel bikes designed for daily riding and touring are usually slightly heavier, while performance-oriented models focus on low weight and maximum efficiency.
