Touring bikes are a smart all-round choice. If you’re looking for one versatile bicycle that can handle short weekend rides, everyday commuting to work, and longer tours with panniers on the rack, a touring bike is often the ideal compromise. These bikes offer a comfortable riding position, plush saddles, and frequently come with adjustable stems so you can fine-tune your fit for relaxed riding. They’re typically equipped with fast-rolling, durable tyres, mudguards, racks, and front/rear LED lights powered by a front dynamo hub.
Types of touring bikes
- Trekking / city–touring model — usually already fitted with mudguards, a rear rack, lights and a kickstand; suited to daily use and weekend rides.
- Classic touring bike — a frame with plenty of mounts, designed for front and rear panniers; stable handling under load.
- Adventure touring — a lighter setup using soft bikepacking bags; increased tyre clearance for gravel and forest roads.
- Frame style — step-through (easy to mount), trapezoid or classic diamond; choose based on habit and how much luggage you carry.
What to consider when choosing a touring bike
- Route. Asphalt + light gravel: 40–45 mm tyres and one rack are enough. Long days with bags front and rear: look for a frame with mounts for a front rack.
- Gearing:
- Hub gears (e.g., 7/8-speed) — simpler upkeep, can shift while stationary; great for daily use and road touring.
- Derailleur (1×/2×) — wider range for hills and headwinds. - Brakes. Disc brakes for confident stopping in rain and with full luggage.
- Wheels and tyres. Built tougher to roll well and carry heavier loads on longer trips. Wider tyres (45–50 mm) add comfort and grip on gravel.
- Comfort. More upright posture, wider bars, softer saddle, tyres that soak up bumps.
Which touring bike brands are available?
- Cube — practical touring frames with many mounts, comfortable geometry and solutions for riding with bags.
- Scott — reliable specs for daily use and longer rides, upright posture, space for mudguards/rack.
- Creon — functional models with good equipment at a sensible price.
